Also check settings in Gmail under your account name, not general settings, all the way at the bottom there a sync Gmail option, make sure that's checked. There are no Battery settings that can be changed to prevent this meaning the app has to be opened to receive emails. Works fine on my 8T. You might try clearing the data cache. It automatically suggests the folder with the most email from the sender for a move. Saves so much time. The Gmail app feels so archaic. It doesn't even have a search like the desktop version does (when moving email). .
